Saturday February 9, 2008

I would like to thank the membership for there patience over the last few months with regards to the weather and the course conditions. It has has been an unusually long and trying period but I think (and hope) we're almost through it. Although temperatures have warmed somewhat over the past few days I must ask that your patience continues through this crucial time.

Currently we have experienced some thawing but with the extended cold snap this winter the frost has gone unusually deep. Right now we have only about 1.5 to 2 inches of thawed grass/roots & soil on most greens, as well, this thawed layer is extremely saturated and sitting on top of a deeper layer of frost. As you can imagine, this is not a good formula for that top layer if it was to see even a small amount of traffic. Thus as it was on Friday, we will only be opening those greens in which the frost layer has thawed completely.

If we were to allow play on these surfaces in their current condition we would be causing damage which would hamper our maintenance practices possibly through the end of May. The effects would be such things as, taking longer to recover from our spring punch, soil compaction, a delay in lowering the mower blades, generally unhealthy turf conditions making them more susceptible to disease and less enjoyable to play on.

I know without question this is not what any of you want to here right now but we must make this short term sacrifice for the long term gain. Please remember it is only Feb. 9th and we have a long way to go and much great golf yet to be played this year. When conditions permit we will definately have you back on the greens. Trust me, we don't enjoy defending our maintanence practice any more than you enjoy playing on temps.

Today's conditions to start with this morning are; all back 9 greens will be open with the exception of #12 & #14 but the front 9 will remain all temps.

Sincerely,

Cory Betz

Director of Golf
